| I managed to get an older version of the The Core Media Player installed on my PA-2400W. And it plays. But when I play a MP3 song - it keeps pausing as though buffering. I tried all the settings, but nothing seems to fix this halting of the mp3 playing. What to do? |

| whats the quality of your MP3?
any chance you can re-encode it to a lower quality?
Also, not sure if it works with mp3's but TCPMP has a benchmark feature. Try running a benchmark on an mp3. It will show what the bottleneck is.

| I did the benchmark, but don't know what any of the results mean
What software does one need to re-encode MP3 files? |

| quiche,
Can you post what the results said? It should be important.. Also, I think Windows Media Player for desktop supports re-encode of mp3s, also, iTunes, etc.. |

| Well, it looks like you need to re-encode the MP3 to a smaller bit rate, perhaps at least 70kb/sec.. |

| Thanks. What version Microsoft Media Player is good for re-encoding - 7, 9 or 10? |

| the important stuff:
Bench. Data Rate 76 kbit/s
Original Data Rate 128 kbit/s
unfortunately, I can only find a german version, but this should help you with the re-encoding. there arent that many buttons, so it shouldnt be too hard to figure out

| WMP 10 should be able to re-encode well too.
This seems to be a drawback of grayscale CE devices - every one I have does this. But I notice it only seems to happen on some tracks, though I haven't checked the bitrates of the MP3 files for comparison. I suspect it's really picky about this - I'd recommend trying exactly 64 Kbps as the bitrate and work from there. |

| I second CE Geek on 64K, using arbitrary encoding values can introduce problems.
You might also want to think about making it mono and reducing the frequency encoding - I needed to perform both those steps to get mp3's working through hum on the 320LX way back when men were men and 20 pence got you a return flight to Tazmania |

| 64kps sounds good. Now I just have to figure out the German menu on the program PocketDVD linked above. It does work on Windows 98 and it looks nifty. |

| I got the German program linked above to work good. And the files are smaller - so more MP3 songs on my storage card - HOORAY! |

| For best quality on 64 kbps, use MONO. it sounds exacly like 128kbps stereo but is half the size. you could go a bit lower like 32kbps mono.
I used this a while ago (when the english version was still around ) and managed to fit about 900 songs (32kbps mono ) on a 512mb memorycard.

| It worked! Thanks, PocketDVD. I'm playing a song now on the handheld with TCMP. Now I'm going to use this German program to create a large batch of files for my headphone MP3 player.
Does it really make no difference if "mono" or "stereo"? |
