First off I checked the forums to see if this info was posted elsewhere, but
failed to find any on my questions. So here goes. I just purchased my NEC 900c
on Ebay, and have had it a week now, and I have loaded the same software on
it I had in my NEC 790. Now my questions are these:

1) Do CE.NET 4.2 take a harder toll on processing power than HPC 2000?
2) Do CE.NET 4.2 take a harder toll on memory usage than HPC 2000?

The reason I am asking these questions is that my 900c seems to be a touch
SLOWER in performance that my 790. I have tested them both in opening
certain programs such as Explorer, Cash Organizer, Money CE, and in each
case it appears that the 900c is just a touch slower. Also the unit when I open
Explorer, seems determined to open it's view with the address bar present,
even though I have deselcted that option. Consequently the toolbar is
somewhat distorted until I tap the screen again. I had assumed since the 900c
had more memory, and a faster processor, it's performance would be a lot
snappier, but it isn't. I am aware that certain programs have a compatability
problem with CE.NET, but the above finance program have been tested to
work, and explorer is embedded into the system. Last questions?

3) Due to the above, can I suspect that my unit is somewhat defective?
4) If it is defective, could it be due to a software or firmware update that I need
but do not have?

If I left out any info anyone may need to answer my questions, please let me
know. I am thanking all in advance who may be able to help me on this issue.

HFD

what happens if you try to zip a 5MB file? does the 900c take longer there too?

or try playing a video in tcpmp with the benchmark option and see if the 900c plays it faster (fewer dropped frames, higher played bitrate in kbps)
DO NOT FORGET to check the "keep no backlight alive" in advanced settings on the 900c.

or load a complex website maybe in IE. or, load a simple but big html file locally.

even better, try to start netfront 3.0 (i can send you the hard to find mips version of it) and load a page in that. the difference should really show there.

just opening a normal simple program isn't a hard task for the cpu. if you only use PIM, you'll not feel the advantages of the 900c.

the gui could be faster i agree. but it is faster than on hpc2000 900.

if you tried any of the above, and the 900c is still struggling it could be a hardware thing.

btw, what is the OS and bootloader version in the firmware applet in control panel?

Hello CMONEX:

It appears that there a hardware problem with the unit. Now when I tap the screen, the screen
blinks out, the operation is executed, and the screen comes right back on. This happens for every
screen tap. Since I just bought this unit, I have contacted the seller to request a replacement.

Firmware: P530 42 1.8.5
Build Date: May 6, 2004
PIC Firmware ID: 4.18.7
Bootloader: 4.5.1

Thanks, HFD

did you run tcpmp and play a video in it? because if you didn't tick the "no backlight keepalive" this is what happens! just increase the brightness by using the brightness keys and it'll go back to normal.

if you never ran tcpmp then it is a hardware problem
