Phone-in-pocket problem

I have found a problem with having my phone off in my pocket, in that when a call or text message comes in, the phone is reactivated and so are the buttons on the phone. If anything is pressing against these buttons when this is happening, I can quite quickly end up in the situation where the input buffer is full and I have a clicking brick, which can only be fixed, sometimes, by rebooting it. Have I missed a setting somewhere that would help with this?
