I don't know much about virus/spam etc except that I don't want it.
I use antivirus and firewall programs on my desktop machine. Do I need something similar for my Jornada 820 CE 2.11? Is the OS such that it can't be screwed up (since it's largely in ROM)?
If I'm doing wireless internet connecting, do I need to take precautions? On my Jornada, that is.
Am I worrying unnecessarily?

I asked this same question about my Jornada 680e, and from all I could tell you should be OK, Chris replied to me on the “questions about the Jornada 680e” thread. I posted a link on virus protectionfor the HPC on pages 8 and 9.

When you have a system that you can "format" and restore in less than 2 minutes...I don't think that it matters much. No, you don't have to worry about anything. Besides, no one uses theses things but us. Why make a virus for one?

OK this PI$$ES me off http://www.newscientist.com/article.ns?id=dn6181

"The new virus, known as "Duts", has not as yet succeeded in infecting any computers outside of the laboratory. It was developed as a "proof of concept" program by an underground group calling itself 29A. The same group created the first virus for mobile phones, Cabir, in June 2004."
What the hell? Don't they have anything better to do???

Ar, well that's prehistoric in the greater scheme of things. We ran on it here on the site - basically if you're not running CE 4.x you have nothing to worry about - even if you are there is nothing concrete that it could do anything to your device - as it may be calling Pocket PC 2003 API's.

The virus is a test case virus demonstrating that it is possible, the thing carried no payload.

You may be more concerned with this one: (End of the page)

The post on the Duts virus is here:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/news/archive/200407.asp

It is worrying, but keep in mind that with CE, unlike mainstream Windows, code for newer platforms wont run on older ones. So in the future if someone write a nasty for the Pocket PC, chances are it will not run under the H/PC.

"Rolls On Floor Laughing"
Then there is ROFLMAO; a rather brutally inept Americana for "Rolls On Floor Laughing My Arse Off"

Yeah, I know it is old but I hate the fact they wrote one just to see if it would work. It just gives someone a goal to strive for.

You could see it like that.
Or you could look at it along the lines of at least this guy made a point to the AV companies who now have to take this seriously. Had It been a real virus with a read payload and had it wiped your PDA's RAM clean out - or worse ROM, and the AV companies weren't paying attention. Now that would have been bad news.
