cmonex,

OK, I give up!!

Question 1 : Where can I find Smalltweak?

Question 2 : In this alternate universe, a zip file is apparently not what I am used to. I have found some programs in zip files that need to be executed and can be, and others that cannot be. (all on my XP). In particular some non-program zips on your site that winzip barks at and doesn't allow me to do anything else with either. ( for example part 1.2.3 of a machine comparison) What simple thing am I missing?

Thanks, Don

answer 1: google, i dont know the link by heart. if you really cant find it send me an email to contactchan at freemail.hu

answer 2: a zip is always a zip (i assume you do not mean .CAB here). redownload the files, might be the download didnt finish. and if you need to uncompress part 1.2.3, totalcommander will do it fine.

CE Geek gave me the location of smalltweak. (thanks)

I didn't have any trouble extracting files from stweak42e.zip on my XP.

It produced 4 cab files, one for each of 4 processors (.arm., .mips., .sh3., .sh4.), and setup.exe, setup.ini, and readme.txt.

Beginning of Readme.txt =

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
SmallTweak
Copyright 2002 Tillanosoft
Version 4.2 Feb 18, 2002

1. What is SmallTweak

SmallTweak is a small program for Handheld PC to configure device
settings without using any registry editors.

The following settings can be configured with the current version of
SmallTweak:

- Items to be displayed at Desktop or Top folder. My H/PC, Recycle
Bin, etc can be configured including their icons and names.
- To associate Extensions with Applications.
- Device power off time.
- Window animation.
- System fonts.
- Font cache size.
- Scrollbar settings.
- Software Input Panel settings. (CE 2.11 and higher)
- PocketIE to display 65,536 colors. (CE 2.11)
- Card battery warning.
- Clear history for 'Run' from the Start Menu.
- Clear history for 'Documents' from the Start Menu.
- Clear history for 'Address' of Explorer.

SmallTweak has the following advantages over modifying the registry
directly:

1) Safe

Modifying the registry incorrectly may cause the entire system to fail
or crash, especially for inexperienced users. While SmallTweak does
not have such risk.

2) Easy

When using a registry editor, you must know in advance exactly how and
where to make the changes. While SmallTweak uses an easy GUI, you do
not have to know anything about the registry to tweak your device.

3) Convenient

When tweaking under "Action" tab, all previous settings remain in the
drop down list. Thus, you can easily go back to any former settings.

2. How to install SmallTweak

By extracting the files from zipped archive, you will find
'setup.exe'. Execute the 'setup.exe' on your Desktop PC to install
SmallTweak on your device. Do not forget to connect your device to
your Desktop PC by ActiveSync to transfer the program to your device.

The following files are going to be installed through the
installation.

stweak.cpl (in \Windows)
stweak.htm (in \Windows)
SmallTweak.lnk (in \Windows\Help)
Tillanosoft SmallTweak.unload (in \Windows)
Tillanosoft SmallTweak.dat (in \Windows\AppMgr)

In addition, the following registry entry will be created by the
installation.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Tillanosoft\SmallTweak
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The problem is that I am nowhere near wanting to setup ActiveSync, if ever.

Is it possible to install this program om my 900c using only a CF transfer?

If so, please advise on the details.

Thank you, Don

Yes. Copy the cab to a CF card, then open the file through Windows Explorer.

Cmonex,

Smalltweak has one effect and one non-effect.

By disabling the timeout, it keeps the use of Windows Media Player from feeling like you're having to handcrank a phonograph to keep the music going.

In contrast, disabling the 'cards under battery operation' questions shows no improvement in preventing system lockups.

Thanks, Don

Use GS player, it'll stop the time out. I use it to listen to huge audio books, magnatune audio, stuff taped of the radio, etc. I think u need an edited version for .NET - CMONEX gave me one for my Smartbook. Rich H wil probably have one or a link to it on HPCNEC.com

Thanks. I tried installing that, and it's basic functionality seemed good, including forward and rewind in 10 second increments. I couldn't see the top and bottom of the presentation (menus and labels, etc.), but I could easily live with what I could see and its operation.

Regards, Don

I think you may have the ppc version of GSPlayer. There is an HPC version that works just fine. I'll see if I can dig it out for you. Geared is right - forget Windows media player - it's rubbish.

You can install Total Commander and GS Finder; both free and both will enable you to unzip files directly on your HPC. I never use active sync either.

Thanks, files received. What are ZL9 and ZMB files?

Thanks, Don

The files I emailed are an .exe and .dll file. They'll work on your hpc. Stick em on cf card and you'll see what they really are.

I think win zip is incorectly installed on your XP box, Don, or doesn't understand wince files and cabs. Some of these programs and things try to impose their view of the world on your system. There are plenty of freeware alternatives to Winzip. Let us know how you get on.

Judging from what I saw before, there need to be 3 files. Confused as I may be, I don't think you sent me the application itself. I copied over my earlier application, but it worked the same (which isn't necessarily a problem).

It may be that some uninstall is needed.

Thanks, Don

Look to my post above, Don! I've emailed an exe and a dll...gsplayer2.exe and gsgetfile.dll. I unzipped them for you; I think your file manager needs attention. These are fresh, clean and newly unzipped just for u! If these don't work, I'll email u the ones I'm using now, direct from my Smartbook.
