The jornda itself doesn't have USB support. The dock usb is effectivly just using the wiring in the USB lead to create a faster serial connection.

As for the USB controller.
I don't believe it will work under HPC2000. I've no first hand experience when I say that, however the majority of USB controllers in a slot format are CardBus not PCMCIA. The deivice also needs the USB OHCI drivers on it. (which may be the very ones in the package above, I've not looked up the driver library).

If you were to experiment it would need to be a OHCI compatible USB 1.1 16-bit PC Card, as CE3 doesn't support USB2.

I can tell you though that out of the box, plugging into a Jornada 720. It wont work.

Ok, I think I'll get one of those for cheap and experiment. But the jornada doesn't support 32bit cardbus?

Well just when I thought I'd have to brush-up on my Japanese - success. I had an old USB memory stick adaptor in the drawer, Lexar Jumpdrive, and gave it a try. Works great even with a 256MB memory stick installed! The USBMSC driver is a little pickier about the device than I thought it would be. Speculation - the devices listed by Tsubasa above probably work... others ??? (( Hey, C-Amie, your forums are great. Keep up the good work. I'm still working that AR issue. The Ansyr software is hard to beat though; their pdf viewer works flawlessly on my MIPS machines.))

Dredging up an old thread for a moment, has anyone compiled a list of devices that work with USBMSC?

Went through and installed the above DLLs, making the entries listed in this thread. After that, tried using them with my MediaGear USB keychain SD card reader and a SanDisk 256 MB SD card, formatted FAT. No joy, though.

Next up was another MediaGear device, this time their USB keychain CF card reader and a 128 MB CF card, also formatted FAT. Card is a PQI brand type 2 CF card (note my 512MB PQI card in my 880 actually shows up as a Samsung card). After making sure everything was backed up on the card, I gave it a whirl, and....no joy.

In both cases, I get the pop-up window asking for the driver. I've entered:

USBMSC
USBMSC.DLL
usbmsc.dll
usbdisk6.dll
udfs.dll
fsdmgr.dll

Not quite sure what's going on here, since, IIRC, these use the same drivers as any other keychain USB device. OTOH, perhaps not, since my Win 98 box (an old Portege 300CT subnote that the 880 is replacing) had issues with 'em as well, whereas 2000 Pro/Server and XP Pro/Home boxes never had problems with them.

For me, it's a bit annoying, but bearable - I can always pull the CF card out, toss it in the keychain USB adapter, and treat it like any keychain memory reader. But, I'd really like to give one of these to my GF, who makes a great deal of use out of a 256 MB SanDisk USB keychain (bit older, though, so it might work - won't know till I see her again spring break )

While we're at it, has anyone tried running USB-connected hard drive enclosures? Obviously, there'll be some issues trying to get it to power one, but if it's on external power.....?

Oh, and C:Amie, great choice on a .sig - "Silence" is definitely one of my favs on that album, though I generally prefer Kristy Thirsk's singing voice (do you have the bonus CD with "Heaven's Earth"?)

Grrr, darn double posts. Might as well take the opportunity to verify that the port does work with a USB mouse, though.

I'm of little use to you all in this thread as none of my devices have USB host ports on them.
Great thinking on getting a compatible devices list going. If we keep everything in this thread for now, if one of you clever chaps (or chapettes) gets the drviers working properly we'll make a permanent list up somewhere on the site that users can add to.

{ot}
As for the sig, I change it often, it's expected of me by my MSN Messenger public (rofl, big head C:Amie).
I just really love the bridge in Silence. I have an extended mix by a DJ who added a beat loop to it and took it off into another track. The entire sequence makes a superb little track on its own starting at the Silence bridge.
I don't have the bonus CD no.

Classic.

It's always a Japanese guy.
I'll have to ask Alex if he's clever enough to take a USB key and connect it up to the motherboard. I think he build himself some storage module using a CF slot at one point.

Alex?

Well a USB 1.1 interface is 12 Mb/s, a CF Type 1 is a 8/Mbs and Type 2 is 16 Mb/s

But would it be 12 mbps on these devices... or even close?

And are you sure CF is that slow? Is that an old standard? Why do people say USB 2.0 card readers are much faster than USB 1.1 if the card doesn't even go that fast?

We need a CF vs USB speed test And I need to read a lot more

See the overview of CF Cards in the support section. It touches on the specification.

I seem to get 10MB ok off of my PCMCIA LAN, it's only another 2 meg.

As you all know 1byte = 8bit.
Many manufacturer of compactflash give the speed in a multiple of the old cd-rom speed where 1x is 150kB (byte).

Compact flash 1x 150 kB/s
Compact flash 8x 1,2 MB/s
Compact flash 60x 9 MB/s (Ultra II (High-Speed))

SanDisk CompactFlash 4GB Extreme III (High-Speed) typ I, which I think will be released this spring, will have a transferspeed of 20MB/s

USB 1.1 is 1,2 MB/s

10MBit/s network = 1,2MB/s
100MBits/s network = 12MB/s

This numbers are approximate... since 1KB = 1024B...
(but there is a newer prefix system where 1KiB = 1000B.)

Hey all,

I've been listening in to the conversation about USB pros and cons and thought I'd throw in my 2 cents worth.

Of course my device was lucky enough to have a USB 2.0, and the mass storage device drivers in rom, hence nearly everything I've tried works.

But I have to tell you that while it works...other than testing, I've yet to use my external hard driver, or my external CD drive. I don't use my USB mouse or my USB keyboard.

But there is one USB device I use all the time, and that is the pen drives...or key drives, whatever you call them. With all the desktops out there these days with built in USB ports, it is the easiest way ever to transfer files to and from the hpc unit.

I'm really surprised that a standard USB port hasn't become standard on pocketpcs.

Rich

I'm having a moment here... so bare with me.

MB = MegaByte
Mb = MegaBit

Small b is important to differentiate.

Measuring the data rates in Decimal is grossly innacurate especially when talking 'Mega'.

I have partially written a calculator, which is here:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/toolkit/binary-units.asp

> IT ISN'T 100% WORKING YET <
I need to go back and look at it.

EDIT: URL updated and the Units Calculator is now working correctly
