MB = MegaByte
Mb = MegaBit
Small b is important to differentiate.
Yes I totaly agree. The problem is that a lot of people don't know the difference between bit and byte and then an upper-case B is no differnet from a lower-case b.
I just felt that, the way the discussion was going, someone had to clarify a little.

Measuring the data rates in Decimal is grossly innacurate especially when talking 'Mega'.
Yes the error becomes larger the bigger prefix you use. Normaly a user never have to worry about this
(although it is pretty common that someone complain that their 120GB harddrive only reports 115GB, or what ever,
).
I am pretty new to HPC though. and I guess that maybe you have to keep better track of your bytes and bits when you have so few to spare.
I mentioned in the end of my last post that there are measures taken to rid this problem. A new prefix system based on binary. Instead of kilo you have kibi and instead of Mega you have Mibi. If anyone have used the horrible illegal program DC++, you can see that the programmer have used kiB instead of kB...
Well anyway this doesn't solve the problem... it only clarifies a little... a Mega should always be 1000 000 no more no less.
hm... I think I am going to shut up now... sorry... ranting... thingie..
