| I cannot seem to get my PC to see the device. The Jornada tries to connect, but the pc doesn't acknowledge that it is connected.
I have:
Windows XP
Windows CE 5.0
Microsoft Active Synch 3.8
I have a new cable so it is in good working order.
I tried calling Microsft and they are saying I need to see if I can purchase a USB cable. From what I am reading here, that just won't work.
I have yet been able to get even the first connection made.
Please tell me what to do and how I can get my PC to talk to my Jornada 820.
Thanks - Carol Casey |

| you already have it in the form of activesync 3.8.
can you answer exactly what steps did you do so far? |
|
|
|
| I have downloaded activesync 3.8
I have made sure I have a working connecting cable (it is new)
I have it connected to the computer.
I have attempted an activesync.
When prompted I connect the Jornada.
When prompted I turn the Jornada on.
The Jornada tries to connect when I attempt
The computer doesn't see that the Jornada is connected.
I don't know what to do next.
Microsoft was worthless in their assistance. |

| Moved to H/PC Pro support
ActiveSync > File > Connection Settings...
In the top drop box, what COM ports do you have listed? |

| I think C:Amie is on the right track ... my J820 uses a serial cable (the end that plugs into your computer should have a 9-pin plug, sometimes the connector on the PC has a "10101" label, but many new computers don't have this "legacy" serial port any more ...).
Serial ports can cause various problems, eg, COM1 and COM3 sometimes conflict, same with COM2 and COM4, so if you have a modem installed in your computer (even if you never use it), it might be confusing ActiveSync. It's also possible to disable these ports in the BIOS, so you may have to go check that out.
But hopefully it is just as simple as changing the connection setting in ActiveSync to the correct COM port (try them all and see what happens). |

| I have COM 1, COM 3, and COM 7 available
COM 2 not installed
IR Not Installed |

| Did you try 1,3, and 7 for connecting with ActiveSync?
Do you have a modem installed? (Is there a phone jack on the back?)

Yes I tried all three
"Do you have a modem installed? (Is there a phone jack on the back?)"
yes there is a modem installed, however I do not use it. I connect through DSL and internal network. I have been transferred information through storage disk, for the time being.
Open to any ideas.

| If there's a modem installed, it may be conflicting with your attempts to use the com port.
What port is the modem using? |
|
|
|
| I am not sure how to determine which port the modem is using....can you direct me? |

| I did this: right-click My Computer, select Properties. Click the Hardware tab. Click Device Manager. Click the + next to Modems, double-click the modem name, click Advanced, click "Advanced port settings" and look at the bottom of the form. |
