Sometimes renaming the app from .exe to .rar is not enough. Is there a software for doing this?

different installation programe generators make different installers in different packing format.
the simple ones can be unpacked by ziptools like winrar, 7z etc.
but some of them are packed more then once, some use unique formats.
so, you need a specific unpacker for a specific kind of installer.
Just google "installer unpacker"
or "setup unpacker".
and try them out.
good luck.

It really all depends upon the packaging method.

http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/s/0049.asp is a brief outline.

A lot of the time this can help as well: http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/s/0085.asp

InstallShield CAB's use a special compressor, and cannot be broken out by any process that I'm aware of. Equally CE packages in MSI's are difficult to work with.

There is a simple way i use to get the .cab file inside a .exe.

I actually install the .exe file and once the installation is complete, i look for the .cab files inside the C drive program files directory.

100% work although its a hastle to install and uninstall programs for the .cab

AlanChanXD, that will only work if you have ActiveSync installed. Not of any use for say a Mac user

Couldn't a Mac user use something like Softwindows for emulations and install Activesync for the sole purpose of obtaining the cabs?

To throw my two cents in, I've found that this program called UniExtract works quite well with a lot of installers and even MSI executables. I used it frequently on a lot of installers for old HPC software and came in very handy. Here is the link to it.

If you're going to go that far, then you don't need any cab extraction technique, just AS install it, lol
