| I would like to ask for some apparent information/help on how to rename Removable Disks.
I have noticed that even if they are labeled and have a name in Properties, in File Explorer where the disks are displayed, the name of the removable disk does not appear.
This only happens with removable disks of a certain “capacity”, because if I insert a 500GB removable disk into the USB, Windows 95 sees it, but not as a removable disk but as a fixed disk. So the name of the disk that I gave it also appears.
My question is the following, is there any way to tell Windows 95 to display the removable disk name I gave it?
A thousand thanks! |

| This doesn’t directly solve your problem but have you tried using Total Commander’s file manager? The newest version still supports Windows 95. Obviously, it’s possible it could be too heavy for your system but I thought it could perhaps be a decent suggestion.

| Total Commander is a file explorer third party program, I realize it doesn't fix your problem with the drive titles in actual Windows 95's explorer, I was just thinking of an alternate idea |

| Ah OK. Well no, I just wanted to try to solve the problem.
Also because when I insert the USB drive, for a second, the name I gave to the removable disk appears, but then it disappears. |

| What's the name you've given it? Is it all caps and under ~eight characters? |

| I did some more checking and found this thread here, which may be of interest
https://www.vogons.org/viewtopic.php?p=1122730
This particular post I thought warranted further research, but I don't know anything about it, nor do I know if it would break your install:
Quote ya you can test it, you might need NUSB patch. But I don't see any harm of just trying things it's not like youre going to damage anything. Wosrt case scenario it doesn't work. It's not going to start a fire. Or lose any data.p
Also, this post may explain your drive label issue:
Quote * Once access issues are sorted out, the partitioning becomes the next issue. FDISK can do partitions the size needed, but it has graphical bugs that prevent entry and display of the large numbers of big drives (there are fixed versions floating around) .
Can you try a drive formatted to 136GB to see if it has the same issue? |

| I don’t know how reliable Windows 9x is with FAT32 volumes over 137Gb
In this CE support article
https://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/200205/maximum_supported_memory_card_file_sizes_under_windows_ce/
Quote HPC:Factor has confirmed that Windows CE is capable, at least in principe of addressing volumes up to 300GB however use of this in practice is not recommended and even then not over 137 GB. No solid usage or performance tests have been carried out on such a setup.
Here’s a thread about a similar subject albeit for CE:
https://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=10339&start=15
Per c:Amie in that thread:

The 137 GB limit isn't a FAT limit, it's a BIOS limit in the LBA table. Windows 9x can format a FAT32 volume up to 2TB (another artificial limitation).
So I’d try maybe 300gb and also 136gb and see what happens ? |

| I tried labeling a 32GB removable disk. Unfortunately, the name is not displayed.

| Okay so maybe it’s a graphical text rendering issue with Windows 95. This sounds silly, but do you have the newest graphics driver version for your gpu in windows 95?
I don’t know if that will help but we can maybe rule out this being a problem?
Also is windows 95 updated with every single update listed here at hpcfactor ?
https://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/200236/windows_95_patches_updates_guide/
Edit : came up with some more ideas:
Also I found a third party freeware file explorer that works on windows 95. See if that shows the drive label?

Quote AFAIK switching to the Classic View in the folder settings uses Windows Explorer for the Desktop UI without having to remove the Desktop Update. maybe that will fix your issues ? Edited by torch 2023-04-02 7:16 AM

| I tried the program, nothing the name of the disk does not appear.
In addition I can not restore the classic Explorer, because for some programs, installed, I need Explorer 5.01.

| Is your workflow hindered by upgrading IE 5.01 to 5.5?
That’s the last version for 95 per that patch guide. Is your 95 install fully patched ? |

Sorry, I was wrong, I have IE 5.5
Also I don't have Win 95 OSR 2. I have some Patches installed, but not all of them, since not being in Italian, in the past they changed the language of the operating system making it half Italian, half English. Edited by NarakuITA 2023-04-03 11:47 AM
