Scanner support in CE?

Do CE device generally support scanners? Are there special drivers needed? Could I read more about this anywhere?

Never have used it back in the day.

There were some single line hand scanners advertized that could perhaps run with portable devices and may have come with CE drivers but I never saw such a thing in real life.

I remember that a colleage of mine ordered one around 2001 for his office but it was more or less useless for some reason.

Back then cool things for portables were often shown in ads or magazine texts but those things seldom made it beyond some prototype examples.
