Hi,
I hope that this is the appropriate forum, I'm a bit new to this.

I've been given a HP Jornada 680 with a sync cradle and a serial lead.
It may also be "upgraded" as it has 32MB of memory.
System reports the OS to be:
Core 2.11 (build 9018)
IE version 3.01
Outlook 3.01

After a bit of messing about with IR modem drivers I can now connect
to the internet using my t68i and GPRS :-)
The expansion slot was damaged but I've managed to repare it and have
a sandisk 128MB CF working fine.
This is a very cool machine :-)

The only problem that I can't solve involves the keyboard. It seems to be
"mapped" incorrectly? I can't get access to the: /? or the \| or the ] or the
"fn" key.

The /? doesn't print but brings up "alt gr" in the bottom right hand corner of
the task bar and enables extended characters on the keyboard.

On my keyboard the /? key is directly to the right of the space bar. The \|
key is directly to the left of the enter key and above the " ' key.

On a normal PC I'd just mess with the keyboard mapping until the correct
one was found but I don't know how to do this within WinCE.

Any help would be greatly appreciated as I find this to be an amazing little
machine that's much more usable than my old Psion 3a.

Thanks in advance for any help and apologies if I've just missed something
trivial.

RainyDay...

BTW: The last three digits of the product code is ABU which seems to indicate
that this is a UK model.

Hi,

Welcome to the forums and welcome to the world of the HPC.
This is the correct place ^^
The spec you indicated rings true to that of a fully updraded 680, so a 680e possibly. What is the hp F number on the base?
The Outlook 3.01 means that 2.11 SP1 is installed in ROM.

You're correct on the ABU. As per our guide here:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/support/cesd/h/0018.asp

The ABU code term for "UK British" is really incorrect.
It still will have the @ symbol on the 2 key, " on apostrophe # on 3 and generally everything in the wrong place for us in the civilised world ^_-

The UK keyboard should then run thus (second function key in brackets)
1234567890-= (!@#$%^&*()_+)
QWERTYUIOP\ (|)
TAB ASDFGHJKL;" (:")
SHIFT ZXCVBNM,. (<>)
CRTL WinKey alt fn SPACE / del

If yours doesn't match that rather confusing specification, then chances are you're has had the keyboard replaced with the wrong version.

If it does, first off you can check the cable connection. Turn the device over, and with a T6 screwdriver open the screw next to the battery clip and the 3 along the front bottom side.
The keyboard should just fall off. Just try re-seating it.

If that doesn't work. We'll talk remap

Hi C-Amie,

Thanks for replying so promptly. Sorry for being a little tardy myself
but we had a medical emergency that caused mayhem for a while.

First of all the keyboard matches your description exactly:

"The UK keyboard should then run thus (second function key in brackets)
1234567890-= (!@#$%^&*()_+)
QWERTYUIOP\ (|)
TAB ASDFGHJKL;" (:")
SHIFT ZXCVBNM,. (<>)
CRTL WinKey alt fn SPACE / del"

On closer inspection it does seem to be a bit of an odd layout :-)

I removed the screws that you indicated and the keyboard released just
as you said. The ribbon/flexable PCB looked OK but I removed it carefully
(releasing the retension clip first) and refitted it. Sadly nothing has changed
but at least I know how to take it appart now :-)

Is it possible that the "upgrade" could have been performed using a north
American binary/image by mistake? Could this cause the problem?

The number you asked for is: F1262A ABU

Thanks again for your help. Hope it is possible to sort this out, you wouldn't believe how useful the 680 has been over the last couple of days. Not exactly
a life saver but nearly :-)

There is a possiblilty that the updated RAM / ROM combination was of a different region code.
That said the US / UK / AU ROM's tend to all be the same.

The F1262A is an original release 680, not a 680e or one of the 2 or 3 steps in between.
F1262A, F1299A , F1263A, F1263B, F1262B, F1799A are the codes for the 680 series, - in release order.

I've never myelf needed to re-map a device. However I spent some time with JM from Snoogie Soft who wanted to remap his 680's key. He is registered here, I will try and track him down to come and let you know the best applications for the task. We spent weeks on his problem.

He is a Guru on this topic though.

It may take a little while though as I know he is having connection problems & is currently waiting on a new DSL line 6Mb / 512Kb - lucky sod.

ATTENTION : Bad english inside

Yes in fact in updated my 680 with 32Mb of ram too
The pb is that my 680 is in finland language basically and i put the ram module and become an english device

In fact the best solution is to use KeyMapPro from Jimmy or (like me) use a small device who created small sticker and remap your keyboard with it
i ll add a pic of my device asap
Enjoy u'r "upgrade"

NB : Still wait my ADSL connection !!
I ll be more "online and available" as soon as i get it

Hi,

Thanks for your help so far C-Amie.
I'm thinking of removing the RAM upgrade to see it that fixes things.
I didn't fit the upgrade but assume that it's under the keyboard and to
the left. Maybe you could confirm this before I operate :-)

Another wierd thing: I appear to have less keys than are shown in
Snoogie's (thanks for reply btw Snoogie) screen shot.
The top numeric line (not the hard keys) is the same.
The next line starting with "Q" has only eleven (not including the enter
key) keys compared to Snoogie's machine.
It's the same with the next two lines starting with "tab" and "shift". These
are twelve and ten keys in length as opposed to Snoogie's thirteen and
eleven.
Because of this the sticker trick, and possibly "KeyMapPro" won't work :-( My
keys are not just in the wrong place, some don't exist at all. For example:
I can't get / or \ or ? anywhere on the keyboard. If it was just a matter of remembering or fitting stickers I wouldn't be so lost...

I'd be gratefull for any other sugestions you may have? I'll check the
forums regularly just in case.

Thanks again.

BTW: 6MB/512K DSL... !!!WOW!!! Very green here :-)

Hi guys, me again.

I got impatient (as usual:-) and tried removing the RAM upgrade
in the hope that the keyboard problem would resolve itself.
Sadly the Jornada refused to boot without the RAM expansion in
place. I'm assuming that either a link of some kind has to be
made/un-made or a dummy board is needed for the system to
work? This is the first Jornada that I've ever seen so I'm in the
dark a bit.
I did find a surface mount capacitor rattling around in the case
though. After a bit of searching it turned out to be a decoupling
capacitor for one of the memory chips. The original solder joint
was "dry" and had fractured. I re-soldered it back in place (not
easy) but it made no difference to the operation, which is pretty
much what I expected.

I did note down some numbers from the inside of the case. Maybe
these will help in some way?

The memory expansion has the following numbers on two labels:

A1
HFR7ABB1 08000230

The PCB itself has: F1813-80019 etched in copper.

The motherboard of the 680 (next to the socket for the expansion)
has the following on two labels:

A3
APMNI 42991139

None of this means anything to me, so any ideas gratefully received :-)

Thanks in advance for any advice and your patience :-)

RainyDay,
You wont catch me on-line before 11am local, especially not on a sunday

The device wont boot with the ram module missing as it is also the ROM module.
By removing the chip you pulled the OS as well.

The RAM upgrade also serves as the ROM upgrade to take the device up to HPC Pro 3.01.

You will need to find another RAM/ROM chip or obtain the original one if you wanted to test that further.

In the mean time, when Snoogie comes back around on his next dial-up 'trip', hopefully he'll fill you in some on how to squirrel a copy of jimmy soft's keymap pro so you can just do the manual reassignment.

As for your screenshot Snoogie, ROFL at the extra keys. That's just freaky how they bundled yet more keys onto the board.

Thanks for the reply C-Amie.

I didn't realise that the OS ROM's were contained within the
expansion board. Small wonder it didn't run :-)

I read somewhere that this upgrade affects the screen (number
of colours) is this the case?

I'll keep checking the board to see if any replies appear, tho' I
tend to be on the net at odd times. I have a nice 512K DSL link
but can't always get to use it.

Thanks again for your help, I still have high hopes for my Jornada!
Going to replace the 128M CF card with a 256M model today :-)

Yes it should affect the screen colours, you can however download the driver manually from hp.com. It's called the virbrant display update or something similar.

... scrub that you can get it here.

As for keymap, drop Snoogie a PM as a reminder.

That’s my solution.
Jornada680’s English keyboard have less keys than the same for other languages (for instance, Romanics). Jimmy’s KeyMapPro disappear.
1. Install 680KBDRF.EXE from HP and reset.
http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareDownloadIndex?lc=en&cc=us&softwareitem=hh154fr&product=59950&dlc=en&lang=en
2. Install ArtSkey and reset.
http://www.artsoft.ru/eng/artskhpc.htm
3. Stroke any key to map your actual keyboard in a word processor.
4. Modify ArtSkey.ini to make correspondence key to key.
5. After some tests you get functional your keyboard in 99%.
6. May be you need apply some stickers or mark a couple of keys with an indelible pen.
The remain problem is the copyright system of Artsoft. Discuss here and other threads of this forum:
http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=376&posts=10
Surely this one is not the solely solution.

my solution is language extender lite version. they have several versions for some countries (for mine too ), even allowing layout modification (like artskey). i think they have a better copyright system. but the demo is horrible (until you buy it)
