| Hi, I'm trying to find the answers for my question (I posted in HPC2000 forum: http://www.hpcfactor.com/forums/forums/thread-view.asp?tid=9684&posts=3&start=1 ) by searching. But, I can't use it because it shows sever error.
It only works for one letter. It shows sever error when I type more than one letter. Is it because of router I'm using right now??? Edited by Mr.Jornada 720 2007-07-22 12:49 PM

| You really should just sticky a "No, the search engine does not work" announcement and be done with it. |

| I could put it in 2m high flashing neon lettering, and it would still get asked.
I would rather get it fixed. |

| actually because the search doesnt work, people cant search to see if anyone else had this problem about the search.
so dont blame poor users
p.s.: it still works fine here! (with the correct tricks ) |

| BTW, just out of curiousity I tried playing with this
I found that if I limit to hpcBay, and up to 253 days, it works no matter what keyword I use. If I go to 254 days, it wont work as long as I have a keyword
If I limit to hpcBay and no keywords, it works on all posts (no time limit ), and returns 147 results.
I still feel that with enough testing, in addition to sufficient knowledge of the search code, one can find the cause of this problem. It's an old but effective debugging practice, especially when staring at the code (or the sky ) doesn't help. But of course that requires someone who is both qualified and determined. |

| I found if I don't search in messages (only subects) then I can search all forums all dates.
Does it make sense to change the default search so that it usually works? Eg, last 30 days? |

1. with the no time limit and no keyword, you don't get all the results only up to a specific number of results which is in no way 254 days, so that's why it doesn't time out?
2. if i specify my name as poster, no other keyword, and search with no time limit in hpcbay, it still works. even though it does go back in time further than 254 days. it goes back to 2006-03-22 9:05 PM (up to the limit for number of results ), and does not time out.
so it isn't that simple
somehow the search likes it very much if i give the poster name (filter by author ).
of course if there is access to the source code and chance to debug in every way, even removing some posts temporarily, etc. then that could help. Edited by cmonex 2007-07-23 12:43 PM

| I'm not saying the 253 days limit is a universal constant in physics that makes the search works
It doesn't even work on a different forum, only on hpcBay, with a keyword, on a certain day. For example.
I'm sorry if I made it sound too simple. Like I said, it takes determination. I was implying that testing in a limited, controlled environment will eventually allow you to pin point the problem. One can make a copy of the forum database ("stopping time" ) and run the entire site on a private closed server to do such testing extensively. It can even be automated and logged, so you don't really waste too much time operating the tests. Edited by takwu 2007-07-23 1:04 PM

This would be smart.
It would hopefully at least reduce the number of posts about this. |
