They didn't.
It took them a few extra weeks while our gaze was averted, but we've just noticed that a QFE roll-up was released for Windows CE 3.0, up to and including all updates before December 31st 2003. It arrived in mid February.
A QFE - Standing for 'Quick Fix Engineering' - is Microsoft's term for an orderly released patch or update. When you download an update from Windows Update, you are "QFEing your machine". Windows CE differs of course from other versions of Windows in that the data is stored in ROM. The QFE's released for Windows CE also differ from those on other Operating Systems in that they are not released for the Mobile Devices themselves, but for the Platform Builder.
The Platform Builder is the mother of Windows CE. All Windows CE ROM images are created in and compiled from Platform Builder. It is a very expensive, very large and very demanding software application, and like the QFE release on Microsoft is of no specific use to end users on it's own. You wouldn't want to download and install this QFE, as it weight in at a hefty 1,905,990 KB. Or 1.9 Gigabytes.
The QFE roll-up includes updates for Pocket Office, Pocket Internet Explorer & Media Player. Communications protocol updates for PPP, PPTP, Dial-up, TCP/IP and a raft of others. Updates that Handheld PC 2000 users would very much like to see.
If you are lucky enough to own one of the very few HPC2000 devices with a Flashable ROM. It may be advantageous of you to contact your OEM and see if they will be offering an update soon.
Jornada 700 series users. Unfortunately your devices do not contain a Flash ROM so HP cannot issue an update.
