![]() Thanks to HPC:Factor member thcrw739 for calling our attention to Microsoft's announcement today of the coming release of Windows Embedded Compact 2013, the next generation of what we here know as Windows CE.
The new version will include several enhancements, including improved memory management and file system performance, improved networking capabilities, and what Microsoft calls "optimized startup," with the ability to "boot within seconds to a known state." CE has not died after all. It even says some partners have built HTML5 browsers for the platform (mmm, did MS make IE on Windows Phone 7.x but not on this?).
Although this probably just means updates for RFID and barcode scanners, there's a tiny hope that some manufacturer might build a terminal or chromebook-like device out of this, with that Azure support and all.
